The Cost of Growing Up

The poem muses on the loss of childhood innocence and its replacement by the vexing responsibilities of adulthood. It reflects on past experiences of happiness, playfulness, and freedom - characterised by innocent joys such as games, laughter and living without stress. Over time, these recollections are juxtaposed with the challenges of adulthood, in which the pursuit of material success and responsibility overshadows the joys and freedoms of childhood. This transformation is shown to have physical and emotional consequences, as the speaker's life becomes burdened by stress, lethargy and diminished health. As an older adult, the speaker appreciates the significance of those earlier times, too late learning the importance of savouring the present moment. In the end, the poem offers a contemplative and warning message, encouraging us to regain and maintain the art of living, to care for our body and soul, and to remember our inner child while it's still time.
